what the salary guides tell us

One of Google's ads on our site today is for an NZ occupational salary guide from TradeMe jobs.  For those outside NZ, here is the link.

It's no surprise that the category of retail worker has the lowest median annual salary of $35,000 along with 'hospitality and tourism' which includes waiters/waitresses etc. A median means that half are below that figure, and half are above it.  The highest median salary is in IT at $85,000 followed by Engineering at $75,000.

Here is the breakdown by category within 'retail':

Category / Median pay / Range

Assistant store manager $36 k /$27k - $47k
Management $45 k /$28k - $85k
Merchandising $36 k /$25k - $115k
Retail assistant $31 k / $25k - $45k
Store manager $42 k / $32k - $75k

As the saying goes 'if you pay peanuts you get monkeys', so particularly in the chain stores, you shouldn't expect shop assistants, even shop managers, to be high calibre people with a keen interest in their products; if they were then they would be doing something else.
