steam clouds above Lake Rotorua

Rotorua is famous for its clouds of geothermal steam rising from hot pools.  However, these are artificial, and this was a popular photo location during the steam railway era as locomotives battled the steep gradients of the Mamaku Ranges, particularly in the winter months.  Here KA 940 lifts a passenger train for Auckland towards the summit.

For hundreds of NZR steam photos, see the book New Zealand 1950s steam in colour compiled from the Derek Cross collection available where good books are sold.
