De's at Kaitoke, 29 October 1955

The day that closure of the old Wairarapa railway route between Maymorn and Featherston and 5 days before the opening of the new route via the Rimutaka Tunnel took place, a pair of De diesels are seen with an excursion train to Carterton, via the Rimutaka Incline, one of the most well-known features of the NZ railway system to that point and which likewise ceased with the new route.

For lots more including more scenes at Kaitoke, see the book New Zealand 1950s Steam in Colour.
